How to Track Mileage for IRS Deductions in 2026

Being an app developer, I’m still a bit old fashioned – someone who’d rather do things with paper and pen. But slowly I’ve realized some habits are worth letting go of, especially when technology does the job better, faster, and automatically, without me having to remember a thing.

One of those habits is keeping a mileage log for tax purposes.

What are the IRS mileage rates for 2026?

Before we get into tracking, it helps to know what you’re tracking toward. The IRS standard mileage rates for 2026 are:

  • * 72.5 cents per mile for business use
  • * 20.5 cents per mile for medical purposes
  • * 14 cents per mile for charitable driving

So if you volunteer for a nonprofit, drive to a medical appointment, or run your own business, all of those miles can potentially add up to a real deduction but only if you’ve logged them properly. That’s where a good mileage tracking app comes in.

Why most mileage apps fall short?

There are plenty of apps out there to track it. The catch? Most are free to start but block your trip tracking after 20–30 trips, then hit you with a pretty expensive subscription. And the ones that are totally free? They’re often selling your data(including users’ location data). Think about that for a second!

So I built ExtraMile – Tax Mileage Log

I actually built the original version 14 years ago, for the exact same reasons. Now I’ve relaunched it with a completely overhauled UX, a much more polished look, and a lot of bug fixes under the hood.

As for how I make money with it – there’s one premium feature: automatic report delivery and custom colors and templates. You don’t even have to open the app. Your mileage reports are automatically sent to your email, Google Drive, or iCloud Files on whatever schedule you set. If you’re on the free plan, you just open the app and export your report in PDF or whatever format you need. Simple as that.

If you’re tired of juggling spreadsheets or paying for bloated apps, give ExtraMile – Tax Mileage Log a try — it’s free to download on the App Store. And if you have feedback or just want to say hi, I’d love to hear from you. Reach out anytime.
